"More
and more operations are contacting us with questions on cost to add
to their
existing scale systems" says Tom Hawthorne,
of Central City Scale, Inc. of Central City,
Nebraska. "Their growth and diversity have
made it essential that proper and correct
records be kept not only on a
crop being taken in, but also
storage grain being taken to the
elevator."
Our customers
need continuous access to their inventory. One
customer stated "We were soybean
farmers until last year. We
saw the price of corn and wheat
continue to escalate and decided
this would be a good year to adopt some new
practices and crops. Along with the change of
crops, we also wanted to change our on-farm
storage system. Back in 1985 we purchased
the smaller platform scale system from Central
City Scale for the needed weight information
on what’s coming in and what’s going
out—simply by axle weight. Then we grew
to larger loads with semis and knew we had
to expand our scale system. We talked with
Central City Scale, and their suggestion was
to add a second platform 10' x 30' in size.
This eliminated the extra time it took with
the smaller unit when weighing
the front axle, the drivers on the
tractor, and then weighing the
tandems on the trailer. We added
a 1400 bu. hopper to handle the
larger loads, yet kept the older
pit for backup when the harvest
got heavy. It saved valuable
time and effort as the additional
length allowed us to weigh the
whole semi at one time. We pull
in, record the weight to our master digital
indicator (which keeps track of each load and
from which field to maintain yield average),
and pull out—saving a considerable amount
of time, yet supplying accurate records of time, yet supplying accurate records
of
yield."
